Cytiisine efficace
Conclusions: La cytisine est efficace pour arrêter de fumer. Etant donné son prix (moins cher que les autres médicaments) la cytisine peut devenir un traitement abordable de la dépendance au tabac, globalement. Texte en anglais ci-dessous. Background Cytisine, a partial agonist that binds with high affinity to the α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, is a low-cost treatment that may be effective in aiding smoking cessation. This study assessed the efficacy and safety of cytisine as compared with placebo. Methods We conducted a single-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Participants were randomly assigned to receive cytisine or matching placebo for 25 days; participants in both groups received a minimal amount of counseling during the study. The primary outcome measure was sustained, biochemically verified smoking abstinence for 12 months after the end of treatment. Of 1542 adult smokers screened, 740 were enrolled and 370 were randomly assigned to each study group. Results The rate of sustained 12-month abstinence was 8.4% (31 participants) in the cytisine group as compared with 2.4% (9 participants) in the placebo group (difference, 6.0 percentage points; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.7 to 9.2; P = 0.001). The 7-day point prevalence for abstinence at the 12-month follow-up was 13.2% in the cytisine group versus 7.3% in the placebo group (P=0.01). Gastrointestinal adverse events were reported more frequently in the cytisine group (difference, 5.7 percentage points; 95% CI, 1.2 to 10.2). Conclusions In this single-center study, cytisine was more effective than placebo for smoking cessation. The lower price of cytisine as compared with that of other pharmacotherapies for smoking cessation may make it an affordable treatment to advance smoking cessation globally.
Conclusions. E-cigarettes were used much as people would use nicotine replacement medications: by former smokers to avoid relapse or as an aid to cut down or quit smoking. Further research should evaluate the safety and efficacy of e-cigarettes for administration of nicotine and other substances, and for quitting and relapse prevention.

Popularity of Electronic Cigarette
Background: Public interest in electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) is undocumented. Purpose: By monitoring search queries, ENDS popularity and correlates of their popularity were assessed in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom (UK), and the U.S. Methods: English-language Google searches conducted from January 2008 through September 2010 were compared to snus, nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), and Chantix® or Champix®. Searches for each week were scaled to the highest weekly search proportion (100), with lower values indicating the relative search proportion compared to the highest-proportion week (e.g., 5050% of the highest observed proportion). Analyses were performed in 2010. Results: From July 2008 through February 2010, ENDS searches increased in all nations studied except Australia, there an increase occurred more recently. By September 2010, ENDS searches were several-hundred-fold greater than searches for smoking alternatives in the UK and U.S., and were rivaling alternatives in Australia and Canada. Across nations, ENDS searches were highest in the U.S., followed by similar search intensity in Canada and the UK, with Australia having the fewest ENDS searches. Stronger tobacco control, created by clean indoor air laws, cigarette taxes, and anti-smoking populations, were associated with consistently higher levels of ENDS searches. Conclusions: The online popularity of ENDS has surpassed that of snus and NRTs, which have been on the market for far longer, and is quickly outpacing Chantix or Champix. In part, the association between ENDS’s popularity and stronger tobacco control suggests ENDS are used to bypass, or quit in response to, smoking restrictions. Search query surveillance is a valuable, real-time, free, and public method to evaluate the diffusion of new health products. This method may be generalized to other behavioral, biological, informational, or psychological outcomes manifested on search engines. Big Tobacco Beware
Big Tobacco Beware, the Next Big Story Stock Could Involve E-Cigarettes It’s not too often a product comes along with so much potential. A product with so much pent up demand. A product that is significantly cheaper than alternatives. A product that sells so extremely well right out of the gate the potential to turn a very small speculation into a big score is obvious. That’s what we’re facing here. The market potential is hundreds of billions. Every retailer who carries it has trouble keeping it in stock. It’s the same type of popularity which turned Crocs (CROX) into a shooting star, made Healys (HLYS), and pushed sales of Snuggies past the four million mark. Sounds like it has some potential right? Well, it does have a lot of potential. That is of course, if the World Health Organization (WHO), the FDA, Big Pharma, Big Tobacco, and a U.S. Senator don’t get it completely outlawed. etc...

E-Cigs Less Dangerous Than Traditional Cigarettes, Researcher Claims - Science Daily
E-Cigs Less Dangerous Than Traditional Cigarettes, Researcher Claims - Science Daily December 17, 2010 In a new report that bucks the concerns raised by the Food and Drug Administration, a Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) researcher concludes that electronic cigarettes are much safer than real cigarettes and show promise in the fight against tobacco-related diseases and death. The review, which will be published online ahead of print this month in the Journal of Public Health Policy, is the first to comprehensively examine scientific evidence about the safety and effectiveness of electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes, said Michael Siegel, professor of community health sciences at BUSPH. The battery-powered devices provide tobacco-less doses of nicotine in a vaporized solution. "Few, if any, chemicals at levels detected in electronic cigarettes raise serious health concerns," the authors said. "Although the existing research does not warrant a conclusion that electronic cigarettes are safe in absolute terms and further clinical studies are needed to comprehensively assess the safety of electronic cigarettes, a preponderance of the available evidence shows them to be much safer than tobacco cigarettes and comparable in toxicity to conventional nicotine replacement products." The report reviewed 16 laboratory studies that identified the components in electronic cigarette liquid and vapor. The authors found that carcinogen levels in electronic cigarettes are up to 1,000 times lower than in tobacco cigarettes. "The FDA and major anti-smoking groups keep saying that we don't know anything about what is in electronic cigarettes," Siegel said. "The truth is, we know a lot more about what is in electronic cigarettes than regular cigarettes." Since coming onto the market in the United States more than three years ago, electronic cigarettes have proven to be controversial. The FDA has threatened to ban the sell of e-cigarettes and six national anti-smoking groups -- the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, American Lung Association, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, American Legacy Foundation, and Action on Smoking and Health -- have also called for the removal of electronic cigarettes from the market. Their concerns are that the FDA has not evaluated any e-cigarettes for safety or effectiveness, that the devices contain dangerous chemicals, and that they are marketed toward children. In December, however, a federal appeals court ruled that the FDA should regulate e-cigarettes as tobacco products rather than as drug-delivery devices, such as nicotine-replacement patches or gum. The latter undergo much more stringent FDA regulations. "Taking these products off the market would force thousands of users to return to cigarette smoking," Siegel said. "Why would the FDA and the anti-smoking groups want to take an action that is going to seriously harm the public's health? The only ones who would be protected by a ban on e-cigarettes are the tobacco companies, as these new products represent the first real threat to their profits in decades." The report also reviews preliminary evidence that electronic cigarettes can be effective in suppressing the urge to smoke, largely because they simulate the act of smoking a real cigarette. E-cigarettes might also offer an advantage over traditional nicotine delivery devices, the authors argue, because smoking-related stimuli alone have been found capable of suppressing tobacco abstinence symptoms for long periods of time. The report was co-authored by Zachary Cahn, a graduate student in the Department of Political Science at UC Berkeley. Siegel, MD, has 25 years of experience in the field of tobacco control and claims no financial interest in e-cigarettes. ________________________________________ Source: Electronic cigarettes as a harm reduction strategy for tobacco control: A step forward or a repeat of past mistakes? FDA: e-cigarettes

E-cigarette maker accepts California marketing limits
A leading U.S. maker of electronic cigarettes has agreed not to target its sales and advertisements to minors or to claim its products are safe alternatives to tobacco, under a consent judgment reached with California. The settlement, announced on Friday by state Attorney General Jerry Brown, comes weeks after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it intended to regulate e-cigarettes, battery-powered devices made to look and feel like conventional cigarettes. Rather than actual smoke, users inhale a vaporized liquid nicotine solution contained in cartridges that fit inside the device. Some cartridges come in flavors like strawberry, chocolate, cookies-and-cream or banana, a feature critics say is designed to appeal to youngsters. Florida-based Smoking Everywhere and other e-cigarette makers have claimed their products are safe because they contain no carcinogens and no tar and do not produce second-hand smoke. But the FDA has found that some brands contain a variety of dangerous chemicals, including nicotine and carcinogens such as nitrosamines, and that one brand also contained diethylene glycol, the main ingredient in antifreeze. The FDA last month warned five makers of e-cigarettes that marketing the devices as quit-smoking aids violates federal laws against unsubstantiated health claims in advertising. The California consent decree bars Smoking Everywhere from promoting its products as smoking-cessation devices unless the FDA approves them for that purpose, or from claiming they are safer than conventional cigarettes without reliable scientific evidence. Claims that e-cigarettes lack second-hand smoke, tobacco or carcinogens are likewise banned under the agreement. Moreover, the products must carry warning labels stating that nicotine in the devices is a chemical known by the state of California to cause birth defects or reproductive harm. The restrictions on marketing claims, as well as prohibitions on advertisements aimed at young people, apply to all Smoking Everywhere promotional materials that appear in California, including over the Internet. Ads aimed at minors are defined as those with images of people who appear younger than 28, or "cartoons, fashion or music ... intended to appeal to people under the legal smoking age." Sales of Smoking Everywhere products are banned outright to anyone under 18 years of age as part of the settlement. Other provisions ban the company from selling its flavored cartridges in California and from selling any of its products in vending machines or in self-service displays that are accessible to minors. Smoking Everywhere customers will also be required to prove they are 18 or older by showing government-issued ID. By Steve Gorman (01 11 2010)

E-cig: résultats publiés
les résultats de notre enquête sur la e-cig, réalisée sur ce site, sont publiés ici merci à ceux qui ont participé Abstract (provisional) Background Little is known about users of electronic cigarettes, or their opinions, satisfaction or how and why they use such products. Methods An internet survey of 81 ever-users of e cigarettes in 2009. Participants answered open-ended questions on use of, and opinions about, e cigarettes. Results Respondents (73 current and 8 former users) lived in France, Canada, Belgium or Switzerland. Most respondents (77%) were men; 63% were former smokers and 37% were current smokers. They had used e-cigarettes for 100 days (median) and drew 175 puffs per day (median). Participants used the e cigarette either to quit smoking (53 comments), to reduce their cigarette consumption (14 comments), in order not to disturb other people with smoke (20 comments), or in smoke-free places (21 comments). Positive effects reported with e cigarettes included their usefulness to quit smoking, and the benefits of abstinence from smoking (less coughing, improved breathing, better physical fitness). Respondents also enjoyed the flavour of e cigarettes and the sensation of inhalation. Side effects included dryness of the mouth and throat. Respondents complained about the frequent technical failures of e-cigarettes and had some concerns about the possible toxicity of the devices and about their future legal status. Conclusions E cigarettes were used mainly to quit smoking, and may be helpful for this purpose, but several respondents were concerned about potential toxicity. There are very few published studies on e cigarettes and research is urgently required, particularly on the efficacy and toxicity of these devices.

Who Bloggers are
Examining the Medical Blogosphere: An Online Survey of Medical Bloggers Ivor Kovic1, MD; Ileana Lulic1, MD; Gordana Brumini2, PhD 1Rijeka University School of Medicine, Croatia 2Department of Medical Informatics, Rijeka University School of Medicine, Croatia Corresponding Author: Ivor Kovic, MD Poslijediplomski studij Biomedicina Medicinski fakultet Rijeka Brace Branchetta 20 51 000 Rijeka Croatia Phone: +385-91-1234598 Fax: +1-866-501-9715 Email: ikovic [at] medri.hr ABSTRACT Background: Blogs are the major contributors to the large increase of new websites created each year. Most blogs allow readers to leave comments and, in this way, generate both conversation and encourage collaboration. Despite their popularity, however, little is known about blogs or their creators. Objectives: To contribute to a better understanding of the medical blogosphere by investigating the characteristics of medical bloggers and their blogs, including bloggers’ Internet and blogging habits, their motivations for blogging, and whether or not they follow practices associated with journalism. Methods: We approached 197 medical bloggers of English-language medical blogs which provided direct contact information, with posts published within the past month. The survey included 37 items designed to evaluate data about Internet and blogging habits, blog characteristics, blogging motivations, and, finally, the demographic data of bloggers. Pearson’s Chi-Square test was used to assess the significance of an association between 2 categorical variables. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was utilized to reveal the relationship between participants’ ages, as well as the number of maintained blogs, and their motivation for blogging. The Mann-Whitney U test was employed to reveal relationships between practices associated with journalism and participants’ characteristics like gender and pseudonym use. Results: A total of 80 (42%) of 197 eligible participants responded. The majority of responding bloggers were white (75%), highly educated (71% with a Masters degree or doctorate), male (59%), residents of the United States (72%), between the ages of 30 and 49 (58%), and working in the healthcare industry (67%). Most of them were experienced bloggers, with 23% (18/80) blogging for 4 or more years, 38% (30/80) for 2 or 3 years, 32% (26/80) for about a year, and only 7% (6/80) for 6 months or less. Those who received attention from the news media numbered 66% (53/80). When it comes to best practices associated with journalism, the participants most frequently reported including links to original source of material and spending extra time verifying facts, while rarely seeking permission to post copyrighted material. Bloggers who have published a scientific paper were more likely to quote other people or media than those who have never published such a paper (U= 506.5, n1= 41, n2= 35, P= .016). Those blogging under their real name more often included links to original sources than those writing under a pseudonym (U= 446.5, n1= 58, n2= 19, P= .01). Major motivations for blogging were sharing practical knowledge or skills with others, influencing the way others think, and expressing oneself creatively. Conclusions: Medical bloggers are highly educated and devoted blog writers, faithful to their sources and readers. Sharing practical knowledge and skills, as well as influencing the way other people think, were major motivations for blogging among our medical bloggers. Medical blogs are frequently picked up by mainstream media; thus, blogs are an important vehicle to influence medical and health policy.
